There are just five rhino species globally and losing any one of them spells disaster for surrounding ecosystems. Rhinos are keystone species so much of the health of an ecosystems depends on their behavior. Through grazing, browsing, and wallowing, these herbivores disperse seeds and keep vegetation populations under control throughout Southeast Africa.
Why Are Black Rhinos Endangered?
Black Rhinos are classified as critically endangered for one big reason; poaching. Rhino horns are a valuable commodity in on the international market. Other than a trophy piece, rhino horns can actually be used for their medicinal properties. Pills derived from horns are used to treat fevers in China and Vietnam. There are however, much less damaging remedie alternatives that do not result in the loss of one of the most precious species on Earth.
What's The International Rhino Foundation and What Is Their Impact?
The International Rhino Foundation (IRF), is a non-profit based in Texas. They work in eight countries for the conservation of rhino species. The IRF works to reduce the demand for rhino horns on the international market, disrupt the traffiking of this Ivory, and connect with local conservation organizations and authorities for the betterment of rhino populations. We chose to connect with the IRF for their unwaivering commitment to the critically endangered Black Rhino and other rhino species. As such, 10% of purchases from The Rhino Edition will be commited to the IRF and their mission.
