Why Are Northern Spotted Owls Endangered?
The invasive barred owls out-compete spotted owls for food and territory. This along with habitat destruction has led spotted owls to the brink of extinction. Despite these facts, we should not be discouraged. The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service is attempting to remove barred owls from the West, and many organizations are working to revitalize the northern spotted owl population. One organization that caught our attention is the Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program (NSOBP). Purchasing from Team Spotted Owl funds the NSOBP.
What Does NSOBP Do To Help?
The Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program is a leading organization doing their best to revitalize northern spotted owl populations. They have a facility in British Colombia that provides a safe place for spotted owls to raise juveniles without the threat of predators. NSOBP also artificially incubates owl eggs and hand raises owl chicks, creating a hopeful future for the northern spotted owl population.
